A midsummer night's dream🧚🏼
The romantic, ethereal, twilight-y new moon of June
Happy, lovely June new moon, my friend.
Each month, a new moon opens up a new lunar cycle. It is a fresh start. A reset. Time to welcome in a bit of new energy. And, since June has just gotten started and the season of summer seems to now be upon us (if not always in weather, at least in the hours of daylight), this new moon offers us a chance to double down on this month’s sweet, summer energy of abundance and life.
Listen to June’s podcast here:
June’s new moon feels like a reminder to indulge in each moment and an opportunity to slow down and dream up how to bring more deep presence into the lunar cycle that takes us through the festival of midsummer/Litha and those long, warm summer nights.
There is not much darkness to the dark new moon of this month, as the days are long and bright. Especially up here in the Nordic countries. Up here, this is the season of the midnight sun. Though the sun does actually set where I live. But only for 3 hours before rising again. Even so, it is never fully dark here at this time of the year. Making the new moon cycle this month and next month extra magical, I believe.
The new moon in June does not bring the same deep, dark vibe as it does in the winter months, when we have only 4 hours of daylight and 20 hours of darkness. And this summer, when the nights are pink and orange and blue, the new moon is bringing me all kinds of midsummer night’s dream vibes: Romantic, dreamy, twilight-y, laid-back, ethereal, relaxed, twinkly, flowery, soft, magical. It is the time of the faeries and woodland creatures and bonfires. Of sitting together and talking late into the night. Of long nights of life and laugher echoing throughout the city. Of stepping outside and and soaking in sunsets and sunrises.
There is something extra special about the June new moon, I think. Not only does it invite me begin to move deeply into summer, but it reminds me to lose myself in the summer energy all around me. Even as I continue to work during the next 4 weeks before my 4 week vacation, I feel that this new moon cycle offers me the opportunity to balance slower work days (because, let’s face it, as vacation draws near and with the young people I work with gone for their summer now, my brain begins to shut down), while at the same time bringing in those vacay vibes every single night after work, hence indulging in every bit of summer I can find in every single moment.
In fact, Lina and I decided a few years ago to stop waiting for our vacation in July to really start to relax. We begin the winding down and settling into summer phase in June. And, at the end of the summer, even as we return to work in August, we also slowly emerge from summer quite slowly by letting vacay vibes seep into our daily routines. Thus, we extend and enjoy summer for as long as we can by bookending our 4 week summer vacation in July with 4 weeks of magical, midsummer-y, dreamy summer nights in June and 4 weeks of wild, hot, late summer nights in August.
So, here we are. Under the new moon that cannot be seen, but can nevertheless can be felt. Tonight is our call to make all moments dreamy and magical. To listen for secret hidden messages in the twilight nights and to observe soft, lush, abundance of earth all around us. To create a mood of soft, gentleness wherever we are and to romanticize the magic of every moment.
And to ponder, if only for this moon cycle, what it means to live in a midsummer night’s dream.
Blessed new moon, love.
xoxo. liz.
P.S. Here’s a little moon playlist I listen to every new and full moon phase - if you happen to be looking for some dreamy, lunar vibes:
I cannot imagine what it is like to live somewhere where it never really gets dark. It is so fascinating. Do you feel more awake? Waking in the night and it’s still light, I find it almost unfathomable. I do have to admit to being a winter lover though so those 20 hours of darkness may well suit me xx
